Old town of Faro, Algarve

It is a city that no longer quite knows where it stands: a former fishing village, Faro is today an undeniable player in Portuguese tourism. Across the Algarve, and for many years now, the beauty of the coast has in places been tarnished by mass tourism, drawn to the region for holidays in the sun; with its urbanisation sometimes marked by tall buildings contrasting with the superb old winding alleys, Faro is no exception. Nevertheless, it is now starting to reclaim its former glory.

Located in the Algarve region, this city continues to dazzle us with its old-world charm and its proximity to one of the most beautiful nature reserves in the region, as well as sublime beaches. The old photographs we share with you here, from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, are the “living” proof!
