In short — Yes — Lisbon is one of the safest capitals in Europe, and Portugal regularly ranks among the most peaceful countries in the world. Violent crime is rare; the main thing to watch is pickpocketing in tourist hotspots, on tram 28 and in crowded transport. With normal big-city caution, day or night, solo travellers, women and LGBTQI+ visitors generally feel very safe.
Peaceful street in central Lisbon
This is a question we hear a lot. At first it surprised us, because the answer seemed obvious. But on reflection, it is a perfectly relevant question. Whether in terms of general safety or daily life — in the streets, for women, for LGBTQI+ people… read this article to find out more.

1 – Lisbon, a safe capital

It is undeniable: Portugal in general is known as one of the safest countries in Europe, even in the world — one of the reasons it attracts so many travellers as well as people who want to settle here permanently. There is little serious violent crime, no terrorist threat, very few physical attacks… In particular for women and queer people, Lisbon is a very welcoming capital, where you feel comfortable and safe. Make no mistake though — contrary to what some TV shows and reports suggest, living in Portugal, Lisbon included, is not “the same life as at home but with extra sunshine and safety”. Portugal has its own values, its own rules and its own way of working. If you intend to move here, it is better to live here for a few months before making your decision. As for travellers: you can come with complete peace of mind 🙂

2 – The subtleties to know

In some respects, however, Portugal is no safer than anywhere else. For example, road offences are higher than in many countries (accidents, infractions…), which creates a more “dangerous” driving climate. Also, capitals attract pickpockets, and that is the case in Lisbon if you do not pay attention to your belongings in certain streets or at local events (markets, festive spots…). In Lisbon they are particularly well organised: dressed up as tourists with props such as a map in hand, a camera, sunglasses… The guides end up recognising them! As everywhere, simply follow the basic rules of travelling abroad: keep your bag openings in sight, do not follow someone you do not know… Travel to Lisbon can reassure you: there are no real “no-go areas” in Lisbon, at least not in the city centre. The somewhat less safe neighbourhoods are in the outskirts — areas you will not visit anyway, as they are completely off the tourist map.
